Areas of special interest

My name is Catriona O’ Neill – Hayes. I am a pre accredited Play Therapist with IAPTP. Following undertaking my BA in Applied Social Studies in Social Care from Waterford Institute of Technology I did a certificate in Counselling and from there I trained as a Play Therapist graduating in 2012. I utilize the therapeutic powers of play to help children resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development. The relational based approach I utilize ensures that I follow the child’s lead and pace in their healing journey. Considering the child’s emotional and social development stage is key to their healing. I also provide parental support and is individually tailored to meet the needs of the family system.

I work with Children and young people ranging from having mild adjustment issues (stressful events such as parental separation, anxiety, school refusal, bereavement, hospitalization, struggling with developmental challenges or a single incident trauma), to complex needs. I work with children and young people who have experienced relational or developmental trauma. I have a particular interest in working with children who have trauma and attachment difficulties. I have worked in an array of settings including Women’s refuges, Primary School, as part of a multi disciplinary therapeutic team as well as in private practice.
